2016 Service Award Winner, Joe Shandera - Joe Shandera retired from teaching and coaching in 2013 after 44 years. His coaching career - with stops at Curtis Medicine Valley, North Platte, Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln High - always involved track and field. In 2011, Joe was honored by the Nebraska Coaches Association as the Jim Farrand Assistant Coach of the Year. Current Nebraska assistant coach Matt Martin was one of his athletes while coaching in North Platte. Joe’s first experience helping with Nebraska track and field meets was supervising high school student workers at the 2003 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The following season, he began volunteering as a clerk and continues to enjoy his association with the other dedicated officials and outstanding athletes. Joe has also volunteered the past several years with the Nebraska and National State Games Track and Field meets. Joe’s family includes Linda, his wife of 45 years; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Kevin Kugler and their two daughters, Mackenzi and Cassidy; and daughter, Jill Shandera.
